The No.4 West Virginia Mountaineers get the Thursday night national spotlight all to their own when they travel to Maryland for a tilt with the 2-0 Terps. The Mountaineers, led by Heisman hopefuls RB Steve Slaton and QB Patrick White, are expected to blow away the terrapins having been installed -16 ½ point favorites by online sports wagering powerhouse Sportsbook.com while Bodog.com shows Maryland at +17. Handicapping expert at Point-Spreads.com, Reno Goldberg , advises approaching this double-digit line with caution especially if you are leaning on the side of the Mountaineers. “West Virginia will have a target on its back in every game, especially on the road,” said Goldberg. These schools are long time rivals and anything can happen in spite of what the oddsmakers think.” The Mounties went to Marshall last Saturday a -26 ½ point favorite and failed to cover winning by 25 SU. In their opener the Mountaineers pounded Western Michigan 62-24 SU at Morgantown covering ATS as a -25 point home favorite. Thursday’s game with Maryland will be the third consecutive game where oddsmakers have favored West Virginia by more than three touchdowns. West Virginia features a high-powered rushing attack with a pair of Heisman Trophy hopefuls in quarterback Pat White and running back Steve Slaton . Last season in Morgantown, West Virginia Maryland 45-24 on the strength of 340 yards rushing. The Terps are sort of an unknown having played two under the radar games, opening with a 31-14 win over sub-division Villanova and following with a 26-10 SU win at Sun Belt member Florida International, failing to cover ATS as a -23 point road favorite. Maryland has won six of its last seven at home and is 31-8 in coach Ralph Friedgen's six-plus seasons. Friedgen has directed the Terps to two undefeated home seasons (7-0 in 2001; 6-0 in 2003). The Mounties and Terps are playing for the 46th time in the traditional series with the Mountaineers holding a slight 22-21-2 edge. The Terps have defeated a top-5 team once in the Friedgen era knocking off No. 5 Florida State 20-17 in 2004. The Terps are good playing at home winning six of their last seven games in Byrd Stadium and is 31-8 in Friedgens six-plus seasons. Maryland went undefeated at home , 7-0 in 2001 and 6-0 in 2003.
