The Friday night college football game on ESPN2 gives us a chance to see a couple of teams that seldom find themselves on national television, but should still offer up plenty of entertainment for the college fan that can’t seem to get enough. The University of Nevada Wolf Pack travel to Las Cruces, N.M. to play the Aggies of New Mexico State University with kick-off set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
Nevada is laying -6 ½ points as a road favorite down from the -7.0 point opening chalk according to oddsmakers at Sportsbetting.com. The game total is holding at 68.
The big gun for New Mexico State is Chase Holbrook . The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Holbrook, a junior, is one of the nation's top quarterbacks. He is completing 72.5 percent of his passes, and he is No. 8 in the nation with 306.4 passing yards per game. He missed nearly all of the Boise State game in early October with rib injuries and the Aggies lost, 58-0.
The Aggies' success on offense is based mostly on a high-percentage passing game, a lot of screens and shovel passes and short routes. They average about 45 pass attempts per game.
Statistically, the Nevada pass defense ranks first in the WAC, but it is somewhat deceptive. The run defense, until recently, has been among the nation's worst, so teams have taken the "why throw it when you can run it" approach. Nevada was whistled for four pass-interference penalties last week, which no doubt got the Aggies' attention.
Nevada freshman Colin Kaepernick has emerged as possibly the best dual threat quarterback in the WAC. Against Boise State Kaepernick passed for 243 yards, rushed for 177 yards and was responsible for five touchdowns in the Wolf Pack's 69-67 quadruple-overtime loss. It will be a challenge for an inexperienced Aggie’s linebacker corps to contain him.
The Nevada vs. NMSU battle is not the only Friday night action. ESPNU subscribers can see some MAC action in the game between Bowling Green Falcons and Akron Zips. Sportsbetting.com has Bowling Green the favorite with a -6 1/2 point chalk with a 56 total.
In another Friday MAC game, the Temple Owls travel to Athens, Ohio for a game with the Ohio Bobcats. The Cats are laying -9.0 points as the home favorite while the total is set at 54. This game is not televised.
