Rutgers now faces a must win situation at South Florida if it hopes to capture the Big East title. To make matters worse, Rutgers two remaining home games look far more formidable now than they did in August as Syracuse and Louisville are both playing quality football for the most part.
South Florida comes into this evening's game with a 4-3 record and somewhat desperate as well. The Bulls did snap a two game skid their last time out, beating Cincinnati 38-30 at Nippert Stadium, but they are 1-2 in conference play after losing to Syracuse and West Virginia.
South Florida has also had its share of woes against the Knights, having lost four in a row to Rutgers by an average of 17.3 points per game. Greg Schiano's troops blanked the Bulls 31-0 last year and they dumped them 49-16 in Tampa two seasons ago.
Both of these squads are solid defensively, but Rutgers may be able to find an advantage through the air. South Florida's pass defense ranks 64th nationally, giving up an average of 215 yards per game. The Scarlet Knights freshman quarterback Chas Dodd has proven himself a capable threat, throwing for 573 yards and four touchdowns in wins over UConn and Army.
