The University of South Florida Bulls football team will be out for revenge Wednesday night (7 pm ET, ESPN2) when they play the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a crucial BIG EAST game for both schools, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. It was last November when the Bulls were victimized in New Jersey, losing 31-0. The bad taste of that loss has been lingering for a year in the mouths of Bulls players. The Scarlet Knights (4-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) have a slight edge over USF (4-3, 1-2) in the BIG EAST standings
The last time the University of South Florida Bulls football team played on their home field at Raymond James Stadium, they lost a close one, they probably should have won, a 13-9 result to Syracuse. And what often happens, a loss is followed by another loss, in this case, at West Virginia. With two conference losses, the Bulls responded well, avoiding a third, when they surprised Cincinnati with a 38-30 road win. Sportsbook.com had the Bulls listed as a 9-point underdog for that game. The Bulls looked like a different team in that game compared to their previous outings. The Bulls need a win against Rutgers to join the leaders vying for a BIG EAST football championship.
Rutgers, much like USF, has suffered its lumps but is still hanging in there with a 4-3 overall record to go along with their 2-1 conference mark. Their only BIG EAST loss came last week in a 41-21 trouncing on the road at Pittsburgh. The Knights appear to be struggling, with only one quality win, that at home Oct. 8 versus Connecticut. Other than that they have been suspect, winning a squeaker over Florida International, and winning another close one, 23-20 over woeful Army.
Reno Gold's Pick: I am all over USF in this game. Often it takes a team, under a new coaching regime, a few weeks of playing together before they totally get the new system. The Bulls looked like a team – whose light has come on – in last weeks victory at Cincinnati. I believe Rutgers and USF to be heading in opposite directions at this point of the BIG EAST season. I look for USF to win big tonight. USF giving -10 points is the best play.
