Head Coach Kyle Whittingham, whose squad is 5-0 in conference action and just behind TCU in the standings, knows how important this game is for his team and for the Mountain West in general. However, he indicated earlier this week that the players are just focused on the action on the field.
"It's going to be exciting and there is a lot of fanfare attached to the game," Whittingham said. "But once the ball is in the air, from a player's perspective, that stuff no longer becomes a factor."
Gary Patterson's Horned Frogs moved to No. 4 in the BCS standings last weekend after pounding the Aztecs of San Diego State 55-12 at Qualcomm Stadium. The win brought TCU's overall record to a perfect 9-0 and their Mountain West mark to 5-0.
If the Frogs can win out (and they should with Wyoming and New Mexico coming up after Utah), they will almost certainly earn a BCS Bowl birth, just like the Utes did last season. Running back Joseph Turner indicated that the team's current mindset will probably help it meet that goal.
"Right now, we are a confident team," Turner said. "We fell that no matter what play the coaches call, we are going to be successful."
TCU is 4-0 at home this year, but they are 14-1 and 12-3 against the spread in their last 15 games at Amon G. Carter. The last team to beat the Horned Frogs in their home stadium was the Utah Utes in October of 2007 (27-20).
