It’s not beyond the rhealm of possibility the No. 6 (BCS) Arizona State Sun Devils football team could be playing in the BCS Championship game in New Orleans in January however it’s unlikely because a long series of events would have to occur that are out of the Sun Devils control. What Arizona State can control is its Pac-10 destiny. If ASU (9-1) can win its remaining two games, the Sun Devils will be in the Rose Bowl on January 1. And winning those two games must start Thanksgiving day when the No. 11 USC Trojans roll into Tempe for an 8:00 p.m. ET kickoff. The game will be televised by ESPN.
USC (8-2) is favored by oddsmakers at Bodog (bodog.com) -3 against the spread and -155 on the money line. The game total is posted at 50 points.
The Sun Devils are 9-1 and 5-1 in the Pac-10 and are coming off a 24-20 win over UCLA at the Rose Bowl Stadium last week. USC is 8-2, 5-2 in the Pac-10 after a 24-17 victory over California in Berkeley on Nov. 10.
Sun Devils quarterback Rudy Carpenter continues to be one of the top signal callers in the Pac-10 Conference. Carpenter ranks second to WSU's Alex Brink, in passing attempts, completed passes, passing yards, touchdown passes and 300 yard games. Carpenter now has 60 career touchdown passes and has thrown for 7,324 yards in his his three seasons at ASU. Carpenter has been named a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award, given to the nation's top QB. Carpenter is now 20-8 as Arizona State's starting quarterback.
USC quarterback John David Booty, is the best he's been since missing 3 mid-season games with a broken finger. He is 7-0 as a starter against ranked teams. Tailback Chauncey Washington (coming off a monster 220-yard effort at Cal to enter USC’s prestigious career Top 20 rushing chart), Stafon Johnson and exciting Joe McKnight have helped USC's running game improve from a year ago.
