The football game between the Virginia Tech Hokies and Virginia Cavaliers is called the “Battle of the Commonwealth,” and has never been a huge deal outside of the Commonwealth’s boarders…until now. A game that has not had any real significance in at least a decade is a big deal in 2007. The heated rivalry game becomes the battle for the ACC Coastal Division championship with the winner playing Boston College in Jacksonville, Fla., next week for the ACC championship and the leagues automatic BCS berth. Kickoff is at Noon ET and will be televised nationally by ESPN.
Oddsmakers at online sports wagering giant Sportsbook.com have installed the Hokies a -3 ½ point favorite ATS and -135 ML with a posted total of 39. The Cavaliers are getting +135 ml juice as the home underdog.
Most of the betting action is on the Hokies according to early trends both against the spread at 75% and money line at 76%. The total is expected to exceed the posted 39 according to 87% of early wagers.
Virginia Tech has used an effective two-quarterback system this year. Junior Sean Glennon has proved to be a solid pocket passer, completing 99 of 161 passes (61.5 percent) for 120.2 yards per game and seven touchdowns. Freshman Tyrod Taylor has been both an effective passer and runner. Taylor has completed 53.8 percent of his passes for 106.1 yards per game and five touchdowns while also rushing for 47.2 yards per game and four touchdowns.
Virginia enters the game off its bye week following its demolition of Miami in the Orange Bowl Nov. 10. Virginia Tech is coming off a 44-14 blowout of the same Hurricanes.
Both teams have two losses, but they are very different losses.
Virginia lost to two mediocre and unranked teams in Wyoming and N.C. State, while the Hokies lost to now-No. 1 LSU early in the season and to No. 2 Boston College during the middle of the season.
