No team in the nation benefited more from last weekend's upset fest than Alabama. The Crimson Tide jumped back into
the No. 2 spot thanks to losses from Oklahoma State, Oregon, and Oklahoma. Now all Nick Saban's troops need to do is take care of business against Auburn and they can all but assure themselves an apprearance in the BCS National Championship game.
While the Tigers have owned this rivalry series in recent years, winning seven of the last nine games, it would seem an Alabama victory on Saturday is nothing short of a certainty.
Auburn, at 7-4, has performed better than many expected this year considering the heavy losses they suffered on both sides of the ball this offseason; however, the Tigers are not in the same class as thier hated in-state brethren. Auburn's most impressive win was a 16-13 upset of South Carolina back on October 1, but it has fallen to almost all the other top ranked foes that it faced, including Clemson, Arkansas, LSU, and Georgia.
Conversely, the Crimson Tide have dominated all comers, with the exception of LSU, beating the likes of Penn State, Arkansas, and Florida by an average of 22.7 points per game.
The bigger question, though, is can Auburn stay within 21 points of Alabama. Based upon the Tigers inability to move the football against the better defenses they have faced (i.e. LSU, Georgia, Arkansas) the answer is probably no. Auburn averaged just 10.3 points per games against those three teams, which means it almost certainly will not top the 10 point mark against the Tide's lockdown defense. Alabama 31, Auburn 7.
