by Matt Foust on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

2009 Heisman Trophy Odds: With the 2009 college football season nearly in the books, a great deal of attention has now turned to the Heisman Trophy front-runners. The award will be presented at 8:00pm ET on Saturday, December 12th at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square (ESPN), but the five finalist have yet to be announced. However, 2009 Heisman Trophy Odds at Sportsbetting.com have pegged seven players as likely candidates to win the coveted prize. The current favorite to take home the famous Ed Smith modeled trophy is Texas quarterback Colt McCoy at 2 to 7 betting odds.

Colt McCoy finished second to Oklahoma signal caller Sam Bradford in last year's Heisman race, leading the Longhorns2009 Heisman Trophy Odds to a 12-1 record and a 24-21 Fiesta Bowl win over Ohio State. McCoy threw for 3859 yards (76.7 completion percentage) and 34 touchdowns to just eight interceptions. He also led Texas in rushing with a total of 561 yards and 11 touchdowns. The 23 year old's numbers have not been as gaudy this season, but they are still extraordinary. He has guided Texas to a 12-0 record while throwing for 3328 yards, 27 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He has amassed 368 yards on the ground to go along with two rushing scores. McCoy made himself the Heisman front runner over the last four weeks, though, as he threw for 1351 yards and 12 touchdowns (just one pick) in wins over Central Florida, Baylor, Kansas, and Texas A&M.

Following McCoy in Sportsbetting.com's Heisman odds is Stanford running back Toby Gerhart (3/2), 2007 Heisman winner and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow (4/1), Alabama running back Mark Ingram (10/1), Houston quarterback Case Keenum (25/1), Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore (25/1), and Clemson running back C.J. Spiller (50/1). Gerhart was not even on the Heisman radar when the season kicked off, despite rushing for 1136 yards last year, but he has worked his way into the mix by leading the Cardinal to an 8-4 record. The 22 year old Norco, California native has rushed for an incredible 1736 yards (5.6 yards per carry) and 26 touchdowns.
