Mississippi Headed to 2010 Cotton Bowl

by Matt Foust on Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

It has been confirmed that the Mississippi Rebels are headed to the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic to take on the Big 12's Oklahoma State Cowboys. It will be the second consecutive trip to the historic bowl game for the Rebels as they beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders in last year's Classic 47-34. The Cowboys last made an appearance at the Cotton Bowl in 2004 when they lost to the Rebels 28-31. The AT&T Cotton Bowl will take place on January 2nd at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas; it will be broadcast live on FOX.

Mississippi did not live up to expectations this season as many predicted they would dethrone the Crimson Tide in the SEC Mississippi Headed to 2010 Cotton BowlWest; however, the Rebels still had a solid campaign in Houston Nutt's second year at the helm, finishing with an 8-4 overall record. Nutt's troops did not end the regular season on a good note, though, losing 27-41 to in-state rival Mississippi State in Starkville.

Quarterback Jevan Snead, who many pegged as a Heisman contender before the season kicked off, suffered through a disappointing junior year. The 22 year old threw for a total of 2464 yards, 20 touchdowns and 17 interceptions while competing just 54.3 percent of his passes. As a sophomore Snead tossed 26 touchdown passes to just 13 interceptions.

Oklahoma State, despite finishing the regular season with a 9-3 record and a second place finish in the Big 12 South, did not quite live up to expectations either. Many pundits and fans had the Cowboys destined for a BCS Bowl game, which was still a strong possibility until last weekend's 0-27 loss at Norman. However, in Oklahoma State's defense, their offense suffered numerous setbacks in the form of injuries and suspension.

Running back Kendall Hunter, who ran for 1555 yards last year, missed five games due to injury and amassed just 288 yards on the ground. And wide receiver Dez Bryant, an All America last season, was suspended after three games due to an NCAA violation.
