Tennessee vs Virginia Tech Expected for 2009 Chick-fil-A Bowl

by Matt Foust on Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

The Tennessee Volunteers and Virginia Tech Hokies are expected to face each other in the 2009 Chick-fil-A Bowl. The bowl, formerly known as the Peach Bowl, is scheduled to take place at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on December 31st at 7:30pm ET (ESPN). The Chick-fil-A Bowl, aside from the BCS Bowl games, gets the second pick of teams from the SEC and ACC, behind the Outback Bowl (SEC) and the Gator Bowl (ACC). The Volunteers, despite their fifth place finish in the SEC (second in the SEC East behind Florida), are a logical choice for the bowl given their close proximity to Atlanta and slight resurgence under first year Head Coach Lane Kiffin. Tennessee closed out its schedule with a 7-5 record and won four of its last five games. The Vols also gave Florida and Alabama all they could handle, losing 13-23 in Gainesville and 10-12 in Tuscaloosa.

Virginia Tech finished second in the ACC's Coastal division, behind the surprising Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, but the Hokies still produced a 9-3 record and a 6-2 conference mark. Frank Beamer's squad will most likely be the favorite in this matchup as they have won four straight games by an average of 24.3 points per contest.

Tennessee last played in the Chick-fil-A Bowl in 2004, losing 14-27 to Clemson. Virginia Tech met Georgia in the 2006 contest, which they lost 24-31.
