The 2009 Heisman Trophy presentation is scheduled to take place this Saturday December 12th at the Nokia Theatre in New York City. The five finalists are Texas quaterback Colt McCoy, Florida quaterback Tim Tebow, Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, Stanford running back Toby Gerhart, and Alabama running back Mark Ingram. The current favorite to win the trophy at Sportsbook.com's Heisman 2009 Odds is Ingram at -350 moneyline odds.
Mark Ingram, even after a solid freshman season in which he ran for 12 touchdowns, was not even on the Heisman radar 
when the season kicked off back in August. However, the 5'10" sophomore will head to New York this weekend as the favorite to bring home the highly esteemed award.
Ingram has been shooting up the Heisman board all season long, but he reached the top this past Saturday with a gutty performance against the Florida Gators in the SEC Championship game. The Flint, Michigan native carried the ball 28 times for 113 yards and a season high three rushing touchdowns. He also had two receptions for 76 yards in the 32-13 win, which helped the Tide garner an appearance against Texas in the Citi BCS National Championship Game on January 7th.
Ingram has amassed 1542 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns this season while also reeling in 30 receptions for a total of 322 yards (three touchdowns). Ingram has averaged 6.2 yards per carry and topped the century mark eight times in 13 starts. The star back's best game came against the South Carolina Gamecocks back in October when he carried the ball 24 times for 246 yards and one touchdown in a 20-6 victory.
If Ingram is named the winner on Saturday, he will be the first player in the history of Alabama football to secure the Ed Smith modeled trophy.
