Heisman 2009: Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has been announced as a Heisman finalist for the third time in his four year career. The 2007 Heisman winner will appear this Saturday at the Nokia Theatre in New York with fellow finalists Colt McCoy, Ndamukong Suh, Mark Ingram, and Toby Gerhart. Tebow is presently listed at +1500 longshot odds at Sportsbook.com after the Gators 13-32 loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship game. The current favorite to win the award is Alabama running back Mark Ingram at -350 moneyline odds.
Tim Tebow came into the season as one of the favorites to win the 2009 Heisman Trophy, and, obviously, his nomination
as a finalists has added validity to those prognostications. However, the numbers would indicate the 22 year old senior has little chance of becoming just the second two time winner of the prestigious award (Archie Griffin 1974-75).
When Tebow won the trophy in 2007 he threw for 3286 yards and 32 touchdowns (six interceptions) while rushing for 895 yards and 23 scores. This season the Jacksonville native has thrown for 2413 yards and 18 touchdowns (five interceptions) and rushed for 859 yards and 12 scores. Tebow, who will lead the Gators for a final time in the January 1st Allstate Sugar Bowl against the undefeated Cincinnati Bearcats, has a 34-6 career record as a starter.
Despite the fact that he is a longshot to win this weekend, Tebow expressed his appreciation at receiving a third consecutive nomination.
"Having a chance to go back to New York means a lot to me," Tebow said. "It is a special honor but it wouldn't be possible for me to have this opportunity without my teammates and coaches."
