by Reno Gold on Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Barring any last minute surprises, Mark Ingram will win the 2009 Heisman Trophy because in the end, the hardy Alabama running back was the best player in college football. Over the season, Ingram was methodical, week after week, the best player on the best team. That's why his name will be called to the stage at New York's Nokia Theater to receive the award.

2009 Heisman Trophy Prediction: Alabama's Mark Ingram will winAt Sportsbook.com, Ingram is listed at -350 (moneyline format) odds as the favorite among the five Heisman Trophy finalists to win the award.

Invited to New York to attend the Heisman Trophy awards banquet are 2007 winner Tim Tebow of Florida, this years pre-season favorite – Texas Quarterback Colt McCoy – and current favorite, Ingram. Also invited are Stanford running back Toby Gerhart and Nebraska Defensive Tackle Ndamukong Suh.

Sportsbook.com oddsmakers list McCoy second to Ingram at +125 odds, followed by Gerhart (+300), Suh (+500) and Tebow (+1500)

It's been a weird year in the race for the Heisman Trophy. The favorite's list at the beginning of the season does not come close to resembling the list of finalist invited to New York for this Saturday's (Dec. 12) presentation.

Early favorites like Clemson running back C.J. Spiller and last years Heisman winner Sam Bradford of Oklahoma are absent from this years party. Bradford suffered a shoulder injury in Oklahoma's week-1 game with BYU and Spiller's team fell short of expectations that sort of took the talented back out of the picture in spite of having great year.
