Texas quarterback Colt McCoy will be in New York this Saturday as one of the five finalists for the 2009 Heisman Trohy. McCoy is no stranger to the proceedings having placed second to Oklahoma signal caller Sam Bradford in last year's voting. Heisman 2009 odds at online bookmaker Sportsbook.com have the senior pegged as a runner up again this year; McCoy is presently listed as the second favorite to win the award, behind Alabama running back Mark Ingram, at +125 moneyline odds.
Colt McCoy has been the favorite to win the Heisman most of the season and he appeared to have the trophy locked up
after a brilliant performance against Texas A&M on Thanksgiving Day. McCoy threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 175 yards and score in the 49-39 victory. However, that showing was followed by a horrific effort in the Big 12 Championship, which led to Ingram rushing past the Texas passer to become the new Heisman favorite.
The Longhorns came away from the Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship Game with a 13-12 win, but McCoy did little to positively impact the game. The 23 year old Tuscola, Texas native completed just 20-of-36 passes for 184 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. He also produced -20 rush yards in 17 carries. It was the first time this year that McCoy failed to throw a touchdown pass in a game and it marked just the fourth time in his last 27 starts that he tossed multiple interceptions in a game.
McCoy indicated he felt like he had a good shot at winning the popular award after beating the Aggies, but now he is not so sure.
"(I) thought I had it won after the (Texas) A&M game," McCoy said. "But you faced some obstacles and difficulties in the championship game, but you find a way to win and I told them (my teammates) that's the most important thing."
McCoy, however, as the odds indicate, is still a definite possiblity to bring home the prize. He has guided the Longhorns to a 13-0 record and an appearance in the BCS National Championship Game while also throwing for 3512 yards (70.5 completion percentage) and 27 touchdowns (12 interceptions).
