Hawkeyes in Columbus. That victory assured Ohio State, which finished the season with a 10-2 record, the Big 10 title. Jim Tressel's squad closed out the year with five consecutive wins, including a 21-10 season finale beating of arch rival Michigan at the Big House in Ann Arbor.
The Buckeyes have not played in the Rose Bowl since 1997 when they beat Arizona State 20-17.
"It's always one of the goals at the beginning of every football year to have a chance to play in [the Rose Bowl]," Tressel said. "You can be assured you had a wonderful season."
Oregon arrived at their Rose Bowl destination by cruising through the Pac-10 with an 8-1 record. The Ducks brought their overall record to 10-2 and garnered the conference title last Thursday with a 37-33 win over in-state rival Oregon State in Eugene. The victory gave Oregon its third outright conference championship and first since the 2001 season.
First year Head Coach Chip Kelly, who was obviously proud of his team's accomplishments this season, might have unwittingly given the Buckeyes some bulletin board material heading into this New Year's Day matchup.
"This football team is going to finish this thing the right way," Kelly said. "We are not going to play in a bowl game, we are going to win a bowl game."
