Oklahoma's season did not take long to get off the rails as the Sooners dropped their opening game against BYU 13-14. 
Not only did their national title hopes come crashing to earth, they also lost their Heisman winning quarterback Sam Bradford to a shoulder injury. Bradford returned a few games later but quickly reinjured himself and opted for season ending surgery.
While Oklahoma did not come anywhere near meeting its pre-season expectations, the team did fight through the early adversity to finish with a 7-5 record. The Sooners wound up fourth in the Big 12 South standings after going 5-3 in league play. Bob Stoops' squad went 2-2 in its last four games, but concluded the regular season with a 27-0 win against No. 19 Oklahoma State in the Bedlam Rivalry game.
Stanford followed up its respectable 5-7 2008 run with an unforeseen 8-4 record this year. While many expected Jim Harbaugh's Cardinal to be an improved bunch, nobody expected them to be in the Pac-10 race in mid-November. That is exactly what they were, though, after reeling off late season wins against Arizona State, Oregon, and USC. Stanford ultimately finished fourth in the league standings behind Oregon, Arizona, and Oregon State with a 6-3 conference record.
The Cardinal also produced a Heisman finalists in senior running back Toby Gerhart. Gerhart enters the Sun Bowl with 1736 yards and 26 rushing touchdowns.
