Cincinnati Coach Brian Kelly Accepts Notre Dame Job: It was announced Thursday (Dec. 10) that Cincinnati football coach Brian Kelly is taking the head coaching job at Notre Dame to replace fired coach Charlie Weis. Also it was announced that Kelly will not be coaching the Bearcats in the upcoming 2010 Fed Ex Sugar Bowl game in New Orleans on Jan 1. It might be a surprise to some gamblers the betting line did not go crazy following this news. Sportsbook.com opened betting on Monday offering Florida as a 10-chalk favorite versus Cincinnati. After Kelly announced his departure from the Bearcat's program, the betting line at Sportsbook.com remained the same (Florida -10).
The reason for the lack of line movement is Kelly's departure was already being counted on by oddsmakers. After all, it was no secret that Kelly, or his agent, have been in discussions with the Irish for over a week now. Some sportsbooks were offering betting odds on Notre Dame's hire and Kelly was the top choice.
Reports say Kelly is getting a 5-year contract at the school. Notre Dame is coming off the worst decade in its gridiron history going 70-52 and will look to Kelly to get things turned around.
While the betting line currently remains the same, the action will hinder the Bearcats. Wnen a coach leaves a team during preparations for a bowl game, it puts undue stress on the team – not to mention the level of distraction.
Offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn, who has been with Kelly as a top assistant for many years, will coach the Bearcats in the Sugar Bowl before joining Kelly at Notre Dame. Then there is the possibility Quinn is offered the Cincinnati job.
