Utah vs California 2009 Poinsettia Bowl Opening Point Spread: The Utah Utes and the California Golden Bears are the invitees to this year's Poinsettia Bowl, which is scheduled to take place December 23rd at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. The 2009 Poinsettia Bowl opening point spread at online sportsbook SBGglobal.com has the No. 23 Utes listed as a +3 against the spread underdog to Cal.
The Utes had their work cut out for them this year trying to follow up an undefeated 13-0 season that ended with a huge
31-17 upset win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. They did quite well, all things considered, winning nine games and finishing third in the Mountain West Conference behind No. 4 TCU (12-0) and No. 14 BYU (10-2).
Utah did lose two of their last three games, but those setbacks came against the aforementioned Horned Frogs and Cougars. The Utes only other loss came at Oregon in week three to the No. 7 Ducks.
Utah comes into this contest having won eight straight bowl games, including the 2007 Poinsettia Bowl in which the Utes beat Navy 35-32 as an eight point favorite.
Many people picked California to finish second to the USC Trojans in the Pac-10 this year and some pundits even felt the Golden Bears would win the conference. The prognosticators were wrong on both counts as Cal came in sixth in the conference race with an 8-4 overall record and a 5-4 league mark.
Jeff Tedford's squad got off track early on, losing back-to-back games to Oregon and USC by a combined score of 72-6. However, the Bears did recover to win five of their last seven games, including victories over Arizona and Stanford without star running back Jahvid Best in the lineup.
