The 2008 Heisman Trophy winner will be annouced this Saturday, December 13th at 8:00pm ET at the Hilton in New York, NY. The five candidates eligible to receive this year's Heisman Trophy are Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell, Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, Iowa running back Shonn Greene, and 2007 Heisman winner, Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.
Colt McCoy led the Longhorns to a 11-1 season and a number three ranking in the final BCS standings. Bradford led the Sooners, 12-1, to their third consecutive Big 12 title and a place in the FedEx BCS National Championship Game on January 8th. Shonn Greene ran the Hawkeyes to an 8-4 record and a fifth place finish in the Big Ten. Tim Tebow guided the Gators to a 12-1 record and a shot at winning their second national title in three years.
Seven of the last eight Heisman Trophy winners have been quarterbacks; the last non-quarterback to win the prestigious award was USC running Reggie Bush in 2005. Only three defensive players have ever garnered the Heisman, those notable players being: Larry Kelley (Yale – 1936 End), Leon Hart (Notre Dame – 1949 End), and Charles Woodson (Michigan – 1997 Cornerback).
