Fresno State vs Wyoming 2009 New Mexico Bowl Picks, Predictions & Odds: The fourth annual New Mexico Bowl will be played tomorrow at University Stadium in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This year's participants are the Fresno State Bulldogs out of the Western Athletic Conference and the Wyoming Cowboys out of the Mountain West. Kickoff is set for 4:30pm ET on ESPN. 2009 New Mexico Bowl Picks, Predictions & Odds at online bookmaker SPORTSBETTING.com have the Bulldogs listed as a -11.5 against the spread favorite.
First year Head Coach Dave Christensen did not take long to make an impact in Laramie, guiding the Cowboys to a 6-6
record and their first post-season appearance since the 2004 Las Vegas Bowl (UCLA). The school is hoping for a similar result to that game when things get underway tomorrow as Wyoming, a +12 underdog to the Bruins, took out UCLA 24-21.
Despite losing to BYU and TCU in the last quarter of the regular season by a combined 97-10, the Cowboys earned their bowl bid by recording late season road victories over San Diego State and Colorado State. Wyoming closed out conference play with a 4-4 record, which enabled the Pokes to finish fifth in the Mountain West standings.
Fresno State earned its 10th bowl bid in the last 11 seasons with an 8-4 overall record and a third place finish in the WAC (6-2 mark against conference opposition). The Bulldogs had a tough road early in the year, squaring off against Wisconsin, Boise State, and Cincinnati after their season opening win against UC Davis. Pat Hill's squad lost all of those games, but they rebounded to win seven of their last eight, including back-to-back wins against Louisiana Tech and Illinois to close out the regular season.
The Bulldogs, which lost to Colorado State 35-40 in last year's New Mexico Bowl, come into this bowl clash averaging nearly 18 more points per game than Wyoming. They also have one of the best offensive players in the country in junior running back Ryan Mathews. Mathews ran for 1664 yards (6.8 yards per carry) and 17 touchdowns while leading the nation in rush yards per game at 151.3.
2009 New Mexico Bowl Betting Trend: Fresno State is 4-2 against the spread and 6-0 straight up as an 11 to 13.5 against the spread favorite with a total of 54.5 or more (Under 6-0).
