Southern Miss produced its eighth consecutive seven or more wins season this year after closing out the regular portion of its schedule with a 7-5 mark. The Golden Eagles finished third behind East Carolina and Central Florida in the Conference USA's East Division with a 5-3 league record. Larry Fedora's troops, which averaged 33 points per game this season, won four of their final six games, but they did lose their season finale 20-25 to conference champion East Carolina.
The Golden Eagles will be making their eighth straight bowl appearance tomorrow in the Bayou. Southern Miss is 4-3 in its last seven bowl games, three of those wins coming in the New Orleans Bowl (2004, 2005, 2008). Fedora guided his team to a 30-27 overtime win against Troy in last year's New Orleans Bowl.
