The South Florida Bulls and the Memphis Tigers will conclude their 2008 seasons by squaring off against each other in the magicJack St. Petersburg Bowl. The game kicks off at 4:30pm ET today at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida (ESPN2). College bowl game odds at Sportsbook.com have South Florida listed as a -11 favorite.
The Tigers closed out their regular season by smashing Tulane 45-6, giving them three wins in their last four games. The strong finish brought them to 6-6 on the year, a tally good enough for second place in Conference USA's East division.
Memphis had little trouble piling up yardage this year as they averaged over 430 per game. Junior running back Curtis Steele led a potent ground attack that produced 205.6 rushing yards per contest.
South Florida was projected by many to win the Big East this year, and the way they began the season certainly lended credibility to those prognostications. However, the Bulls were a tale of two teams, and their finish was more than dreadful. Jim Leavitt's troops managed just one win in their last five contests, a collapse that earned them a 7-5 record and a sixth place conference finish.
The Bulls are known for their stellar defensive play, when healthy. Their 292.4 yards per game allowed average is testament to their ability to shut down an opposing offense.
2008 magicJack St. Petersburg Bowl Betting Trend: Memphis is 1-9 straight up in their last 10 games as an underdog with a spread between 11 and 13.5.
