orange bowl logoThe Orange Bowl was not what Ohio State had in mind when it headed into its December 7th Big Ten Championship meeting with Michigan State, but the team’s national championship dreams ended with the Spartans 34-24 victory. The Buckeyes will have had plenty of time to get over their disappointment, though, by the time they face No. 12 Clemson at Sun Life Stadium on January 3rd (8:30pm ET, ESPN). And if the odds makers are correct, Ohio State will be celebrated a win over the Tigers. The latest Orange Bowl college football point spreads from Sportsbook.ag have Ohio State listed as a -2.5 against the spread and -130 money line favorite in its BCS showdown with Clemson.

Clemson Tigers vs Ohio State Buckeyes Odds (-2.5): It could be argued Ohio State has yet to face a team as good as Clemson, but fans of Wisconsin and Michigan State would bristle, deservedly so, at such a contention. However, the Tigers can say rather assuredly they have faced a better opponent than the Buckeyes and, perhaps, two of them.

That may not generate much confidence in the Tigers, though, considering how they fared against No. 1 Florida State and No. 9 South Carolina. Clemson, which ranked 21st in total defense (350.4 yards per game allowed) and 12th in total offense (502.9 yards per game) this season, got drilled 51-14 by the Seminoles  and 31-17 by the Gamecocks.

The Tigers did defeat the rest of their opposition and mostly with ease, but none of those teams, with the exception of Georgia, are even in the same class as Ohio State. The Buckeyes also mowed through their lesser opposition while struggling some against teams like Wisconsin and Iowa. Ohio State also performed better in its loss to Michigan State than Clemson did in either of its two setbacks.

Of course, none of that may matter when these two suit up next month, but it does provide at least some indication of the better side to take.

Notable Trends: Ohio State is 8-1 straight up and 7-1-1 against the spread in its last nine games as a favorite with a spread between 0 and 3.5 points. Clemson is 1-6 both straight up and opposite the number in its last seven games as an underdog with a spread between 0 and 3.5 points.
