Nevada vs SMU 2009 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl Picks, Predictions & Odds: The Nevada Wolf Pack and SMU Mustangs will square off tomorrow night, December 24th, in the 2009 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. The two high scoring teams (combined to average 68.5 points per game this season) are set to kickoff at 8:00pm ET on ESPN. 2009 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl Picks, Predictions & Odds at online bookmaker SBGglobal.com have the Wolf Pack listed as a -12.5 against the spread favorite.
Nevada appeared to be headed nowhere after opening the year at 0-3, but the Wolf Pack turned things around by winning
eight consecutive games from October 3rd to November 21st. Head Coach Chris Ault put his team in line for the WAC Championship with that stellar run; however, they were unable to come through, suffering a 33-44 loss at Boise State to close out the regular season. The Wolf Pack finished up at 8-4 overall and 7-1 in conference action.
Tomorrow's game will mark the Wolf Pack's fifth consecutive bowl appearance. Nevada won the 2005 Hawaii Bowl 49-48 over Central Florida, but it has lost its last three postseason games, including a 35-42 setback to Maryland in last year's Humanitarian Bowl.
Ault's squad is led by junior quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Kapernick, one of three Wolf Pack players to rush for over a 1,000 yards this season (Vai Taua, Luke Lippincott), threw for 1875 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 1160 and 16 scores.
SMU brought in former Hawaii Head Coach June Jones last season to help revive their moribund football program. Things did not look good after one season as the Mustangs put together a 1-11 record in 2008; however, Jones worked his magic this year, guiding SMU to a 7-5 record and 5-3 Conference USA record. The Mustangs also finished third in Conference USA's East Division behind UCF and East Carolina.
SMU, which averaged 27.9 points per game this season, has not played in a bowl game since going to the 1984 Aloha Bowl. The Mustangs won that game 27-20 against Notre Dame.
2009 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl Betting Trend: SMU is 1-9 straight up in its last 10 games as an underdog with a total of 54.5 or more. Nevada is 8-2 straight up in its last 10 as a favorite with a total of 54.5 or more. The Mustangs are, however, 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games as an underdog with a spread between 11 and 13.5.
