Marshall did not exactly overwhelm its competition this season, but the Thundering Herd did put together their first 
non-losing record since 2004. That year also happens to be the last time Marshall participated in a bowl game, which it lost 14-32 to Cincinnati (Fort Worth Bowl).
The Thundering Herd came out of the gates strong, winning four of their first six games, but they did not finish well. Head Coach Mark Snyder's troops lost three of their last four contests and they were blown out 52-21 by a 4-8 UTEP squad in the regular season finale. Marshall finished up with a 6-6 overall record and a 4-4 mark in conference play; the Herd placed fourth behind East Carolina, UCF and Southern Miss in the league's East Division.
Ohio put together its second nine win season under the leadership of Frank Solich, going 9-4 (9-4 ATS) this year after tearing through their MAC schedule. The Bobcats were 7-1 in conference action and finished first in the East Division, earning a championship meeting with Central Michigan. The Bobcats played particularly well down the stretch, winning four straight games before losing 10-20 to the Chippewas in the MAC Championship Game.
Saturday's bowl marks just the fourth in Ohio history (0-3). The Bobcats last saw postseason action in 2006 when they lost 7-28 to Southern Miss in the GMAC Bowl.
