fsu qb jameis winstonThe bowl season is starting to hit its stride but the national title clash is still over a week away. No. 1 Florida State and No. 2 Auburn will decide the BCS champion on Monday, January 6th at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California (8:30pm ET, ESPN). The latest Auburn vs Florida State 2014 BCS Prediction from offshore bookmaker Carbon Sports has the top ranked Seminoles listed as -7.5 college football point spreads favorite; the game total is set at 68 points.

Auburn Tigers vs Florida State Seminoles Point Spread (-7.5, Over/Under 68): Auburn entered this season with few expectations after last year’s ugly 3-9 campaign. Most believed the program, which still had some talented players, would fare better under the direction of Gus Malzahn, but no one envisioned he would transform the team into an division winner, yet alone a conference champion, so quickly.

Malzahn’s reworking of the offense paid big dividends, though, particularly late in the season as the Tigers, who led the nation in rushing, ran roughshod over Georgia, Alabama, and Missouri en route to a 12-1 record, SEC West title, and SEC Championship.

The Tigers will face a team in Florida State that defied some expectations as well. While the Seminoles were viewed by many as one of the top two teams in the ACC’s Atlantic Division, there were some question marks surrounding the program after the loss of so many players to the NFL. Florida State sent 11 players to the league, including starting quarterback E.J. Manuel, and it returned just four starters from last year’s sterling defensive unit.

The Seminoles wasted little time proving the departures would have little impact as they outscored their first three opponents 157-26. Those gaudy numbers were only a foretaste of things to come, though. Florida State, which averaged 529.4 yards and 53 points per game, allowed over 17 points just one time all season and it scored 59 or more points on five occasions.

Despite having played the weaker schedule of these two teams, most pundits expect the Seminoles to get the better of the Tigers.  The eyeball test probably has something to do with the line as Florida State destroyed every opponent it faced, even the three or four good ones that dotted its schedule. And, of course, some may view Auburn as a bit of a fluke contender given its miracles wins over Georgia and Alabama. Regardless, no SEC team should be taken lightly, after all, the conference has produced the last seven national champions.
