The Texas A&M Aggies (7-5) and Penn State Nittany Lions (8-4) will meet in the Valero Alamo Bowl for the second time, the last time in the 1999 game. Tonight’s game will mark the third time the schools have met on the football field with Penn State holding a 2-1 series record. Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have installed Penn State the favorite by a 5 point chalk with a 51 ½ total.
Early betting trends show 69% of the public expecting Penn State to cover the betting line (ATS) while 60% of money line wagers have been played on Texas A&M. The OVER is expected to exceed the total by 53% of bettors.
Neither program has been to this bowl since meeting eight seasons ago. Much more has changed in the A&M officeswhich are even now in transition as interim coach Gary Darnell will lead this game pending Mike Sherman’s arrival. Such upheaval is all but unknown in State College as Joe Paterno coaches the Nittany Lions in a bowl for the 34th time.
The Valero Alamo Bowl will be Joe Paterno’s 500th as head coach of the Nittany Lions. In his 42nd season as head coach, Paterno owns a career record of 371-125-3 (74.6) and ranks second in victories among major college coaches and fourth among coaches across all NCAA divisions. He ranks fourth among active coaches in winning percentage (10 years or more).
Paterno is the all-time leader in bowl appearances (34th) and bowl victories (22-10-1 record). His 68.2 bowl winning percentage is third-best all-time among coaches with at least 12 bowl appearances.
The Aggies can show various looks in their rushing attack with fullback Jorvorskie Lane and tail back Mike Goodson, but openings might be hard to find against Penn State linebackers Dan Connor and Sean Lee. Aggies quarterback Stephen McGee could also be bothered by PSU defensive end Maurice Evans.
