Stanford put together its best season since 2001, going 8-4 overall and 6-3 in Pac-10 play. The Cardinal finished third in the conference standings behind Oregon and Arizona. Jim Harbaugh's squad played excellent football over the last month, winning four of its last five games with victories against Arizona State, Oregon, USC, and Notre Dame.
The Cardinal, which are led by this year's Heisman runner-up, running back Toby Gerhart, have not played in a bowl since the 2001 Seattle Bowl, which they lost 14-24 to Georgia Tech.
