The game is set to kickoff at 7:30pm ET on ESPN. 2009 Chick-fil-A Bowl Picks, Predictions & Odds at Bookmaker.com have the Hokies listed as a -6 against the spread favorite.
Tennessee rebounded from its first losing season of the decade by going 7-5 this year under new Head Coach Lane Kiffin. The Volunteers, which averaged 30.6 points per game this season, went 4-4 in SEC play and finished third in the East Division behind Florida and Georgia. Kiffin's bunch won four of its last five games, including a 30-24 overtime thriller against division rival Kentucky in the season finale.
The Volunteers, who will be appearing in their fifth Chick-fil-A/Peach Bowl tomorrow evening, won their last bowl game, the 2007 Outback Bowl, 21-17 over Wisconsin. Tennessee is 1-3 in its four previous Chick-fil-A Bowls, the last being a 27-14 loss to Clemson in 2004.
Virginia Tech had its eyes on another ACC title this year, but it was not to be for the Hokies, who finished with a 9-3 overall record and a 6-2 mark in conference play. Frank Beamer's squad suffered league losses to North Carolina and Georgia Tech, which relegated it to second place in the Coastal Division behind the conference champion Yellow Jackets. The Hokies were, perhaps, playing the best football of any ACC school down the stretch, though, beating East Carolina, Maryland, North Carolina State, and Virgina by an average of 24.3 points per game.
Virginia Tech, which won the Orange Bowl 20-7 last year against Cincinnati, has played in the Chick-fil-A/Peach Bowl on three other occasions. The Hokies last participated in the storied game in 2006, losing to the Georgia Bulldogs 31-24.
