Pittsburgh returned 15 starters from last season's underachieving 5-7 squad and parlayed that into a stellar 9-3 mark this year. The Panthers rebound was highlighted by a five game winning streak that included victories over Iowa, South Florida, and Navy. Dave Wannstedt's team garnered a 5-2 conference record and finished in third place in the Big East behind Cincinnati and Rutgers.

The Panthers averaged 29.3 points per game this season and allowed 23 per game in return. Offensively, Pittsburgh averaged 356.2 yards per game and was led by sophomore running back LeSean McCoy who rushed for 1403 yards and scored 21 touchdowns.
