LSU improved on last season's 8-5 record this year, going 9-3 overall, but it could not overtake Alabama in the SEC West race. The Tigers went 5-3 in conference play to finish second to the Crimson Tide in the division. LSU went 2-2 in its last four games, losing at Alabama and at Mississippi while beating Louisiana Tech and Arkansas in Baton Rouge.

The Tigers are 4-0 in their last four bowl games, including a 38-3 smashing of Georgia Tech in last year's Chick-fil-A Bowl. LSU's last postseason loss came in the 2004 Capital One Bowl with the Iowa Haweyes beating the Tigers 25-30 as a six point underdog.

Penn State secured its second double digit win season in a row, and third of the decade, putting together a 10-2 record in Joe Paterno's 44th year on the sidelines. The Nittany Lions only losses came against conference foes Iowa and Ohio State, giving them a 6-2 league record, a mark good enough for third place in the Big Ten standings.

Penn State had a three game bowl win streak snapped last year as it lost 24-38 to USC in the Rose Bowl. Prior to their three game postseason run, the Nittany Lions lost the 2002 Captial One Bowl 9-13 to Auburn.

2010 Capital One Bowl Betting Trend: Leaning toward Penn State here because of their defense. The Lions rank fourth nationally in points per game allowed (11.8) and ninth in yards per game allowed (277.1). LSU's offense ranks 107th in yards per game (309.7) and 73rd in scoring (25.5). LSU is also 1-8 straight up and 2-6-1 against the spread over the last three seasons as a dog coming off a win.
