Alabama Still SearchingWith my ear to the ground I have been hearing all sorts of things regarding the vacant Alabama coaching job. Pretty soon it will be easier to list the names of qualified coaches who haven’t been offered the job than those who have. What Alabama supporters have a problem understanding is why every coach in the nation isn’t clamoring to get to Tuscaloosa for the chance to roam the sidelines once occupied by legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Actually, this is the major reason coaches don’t want to come to Alabama is because they know expectations are so high there, it makes it difficult to succeed.

The number one name Alabama fans want is South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier who has already told Alabama he’s not interested. Number two on the list is Nick Saben and he too has declined the offer but left a crack in the door by saying he wasn’t going to address it during the season. So what exactly does that mean? Bama folks interpret this as Saben will talk once his Dolphins are cooked.  To get Saben the University would have to buck up money in excess of the $2 million that was offered to Rich Rodriguez last week. Saben was getting paid approximately $2 million at the time he left LSU after the 2004 season and is making more than that with the Dolphins today.

Another scenario that could develop is to remove the interim tag from the title of interim head coach and defensive coordinator Joe Kines. Kines at 61 years of age would not be considered a long term solution but he is well respected throughout the SEC as a solid defensive mind and has the respect of the Alabama administration, big-money boosters and current players. Kines found himself in a similar situation at Arkansas in 1992 when head man Jack Crowe was fired after the first game. Arkansas Director of Athletics Frank Broyles hung the interim tag on Kines and let him coach the team until he replaced him with Alabama alum and former Clemson coach Danny Ford. Sticking with Kines would be a smart thing to do for Alabama and this is precisely why they won’t do it.

Kines is currently preparing the Alabama football team for its Independence Bowl match-up with Oklahoma State where the Tide is listed as a +2 ½ point underdog.
