Boise State must feel slighted after going 11-1 and finishing the regular season ranked No. 7 in the BCS standings, yet, somehow, it took a back seat to inferior teams like Virginia Tech, Michigan, West Virginia, and Clemson when BCS bowl bids were handed out.

The Broncos late season slip up against TCU cost them an upper echelon postseason appearance, just as last year’s unexpected loss to Nevada resulted in a near BCS miss. Boise State, a 17 point favorite against the Horned Frogs, lost to Gary Patterson’s squad 35-36 despite a 28-for-38, 320 yard, two touchdown day from quarterback Kellen Moore.

The Broncos recovered from the setback with three straight wins to close out the season, but the damage to their BCS hopes had already been done. Now they face a no win situation against a talented, but underachieving Arizona State team that finished third behind USC and UCLA in the Pac 12′s South Division.

The 6-6 Sun Devils looked destined for a conference championship showdown with either Stanford or Oregon after their impressive 5-1 start, which included wins over Missouri, USC, and Utah, but they were unable to maintain a high level of play down the stretch.

ASU lost five of its last six games and four in a row to close out the season, and while the late slide did not eliminate a bowl appearance, it did cost head coach Dennis Erickson his job. Todd Graham, after just one season at Pittsburgh, will take over the program next year, but Erickson will be allowed to coach tomorrow’s bowl game.

MAACO Bowl Betting Trend: Boise State is 9-1 straight up but just 2-8 against the spread in its last 10 games as a favorite with a total of 54.5 or more.
