Armed Forces Bowl Preview

by Alexander Banks on Friday, December 22nd, 2006

The Utah Utes and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane will both be gunning for victory at Amon Carter Stadium in the Armed Forces Bowl on December 23. The Utes finished the year at 7-4 ATS and Tulsa ended up 6-5  ATS.

The Golden Hurricane hoped that Idris Moss would be a playmaker this season and he didn't disappoint. Moss averaged 116.8 yards per game as a receiver, kick returner and occasional ball-carrier. Ute strong safety Eric Weddle is the most exciting player you haven't seen. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns, rushed for three touchdowns, threw for one and returned a fumble for another.

Only five Division I-A teams surrender fewer passing yards per game than Tulsa, and the strong play of FS Bobby Blackshire is a big reason for that success. Blackshire can cover a lot of ground and has recorded three interceptions.

Though the Golden Hurricane don't have the most explosive receiving corps in the nation, the WRs get the job done. RB Courtney Tennial is Tulsa's leading rusher. The powerful runner has gotten into the end zone 14 times. The backfield benefits from playing behind a mobile and experienced offensive line, which is a big reason why Tulsa's third-down conversion rate is good.

Despite the Golden Hurricane are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall, expect them to come out ready to play in a very competitive game. Tulsa enters this game the slight dog where the Golden Hurricane are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games as an underdog.
