Bama Hopes To End Auburns’ Iron Bowl DominationIf things go as they should go when the Iron Bowl football game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. (EST) between the slightly favored (-3.0-points) No. 15 Auburn Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide, The Tigers will take their fifth-straight victory from the Crimson Tide something Alabama players, coaches and fans would like to prevent.

This game is not just a rivalry game. It’s one of those hate games. This football game is not between schools of nearby states but between two schools within the same state and people in the great State of Alabama are not very forgiving when their chosen school loses. Since the dislike is so intense between Auburn and Alabama, former Tide Coach Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant would not mention the other schools name (Auburn) but would just gesture in the direction and say, “That other school.”

For Alabama to win this years contest, something that 91% of the betting public do not think will happen, Crimson Tide sophomore quarterback John Parker Wilson will need to keep his offense on the field and the vaunted Auburn defense on its heels. Wilson set the Alabama single-season record by throwing for 200 or more yards in seven consecutive games to start the season. Wilson’s 291 passing yards against LSU made him the seventh Alabama quarterback to throw for over 2,000 yards in a single season. He now has 2,287 yards, the fourth highest single season total in school history. He is 212 yards shy of the school record of 2,499 set by Brodie Croyle last season.

Auburn has the defense to stop Alabama but they need some help on offense and hopefully for the Tigers they can get that help from senior running back Kenny Irons. Irons led the Southeastern Conference in rushing with 1,293 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2005. He was a preseason All-American, on virtually every list of Heisman Trophy candidates, a projected first-round NFL draft choice.

Due to a nagging high ankle sprain Irons experienced earlier in the season his production has tailed off. In 2006 Irons has only rushed 155 times for 736 yards and three touchdowns. He felt quicker and stronger last Saturday against Georgia but he got just 10 carries for 49 yards in a 37-15 loss.

On Saturday, he'll try to help Auburn (9-2, 5-2 in the SEC) come back from that debilitating loss and gets its fifth consecutive victory over Alabama (6-5, 2-5).
