BCS Standings Recap

by Thomas Jensen on Thursday, November 9th, 2006

Now on to this perennial mess we call the BCS Polls.

The polls were released today, and nobody’s surprised at how they look. Here’s the top-5 with analysis:

 1. OHIO STATE Illinois just may have done Ohio State a huge favor. Ohio State coach, Jim Tressel, said, “So what does it say that we got taken against the wall? Everybody can get taken against the wall,” after the 17-10 victory by the Buckeyes. Tressel will be on his team from here on in to play with authority. A soft match up this week against Northwestern should act as a nice tune-up for their November 18th clash with #2 Michigan. Final Verdict: They’re the best team in college by far, and the polls agree.

2. MICHIGAN Chad Henne was quoted as saying, “I think [the Nov. 18 game against OSU] is a lot of the reason we weren’t focused”. Are you that scared, Chad? Everybody’s marked off their calender for November 18th, but you have to get there first. Hopefully this ridiculously narrow victory against Ball State was enough to scare the Wolverines straight. Time to focus, fellas. Final Verdict: Mistakes almost cost these guys their season. Hopefully a renewed sense of purpose can focus the Wolverines from here on in.

3. LOUSIVILLE CARDINALS A win over the previously undefeated Mountaineers did much to vault them in to the top-3, but they still had 500 yards posted on their defense. They will be scrutinized and dissected all season from here on in to make sure they aren’t a fluke. And with that kind of attention comes a lot of pressure. Rutgers is a statement game for both teams, but the Cardinals need to thump them into the ground to secure their No.3 spot. Final Verdict: Have to prove they can be dominant on both sides of the ball, but a favorable schedule should lead them to a championship berth.

4. FLORIDA GATORS It wasn’t pretty at all, but Urban Meyer and Chris Leak were able to escape the clutches of Vanderbilt. Leak was an absolute commander on the field, throwing for a score and rushing for two more. However, his 3-INTs kept Vanderbilt in this game when they shouldn’t have been. Florida has to start dominating, or they will slip in the polls, since their regular season competition is lacking. Final Analysis: A close win over Vanderbilt did nothing to help their chances of a berth in the Championship Game. An easy schedule doesn’t help their case either.

5. TEXAS LONGHORNS Colt McCoy had the best game of his life to lead the Texas Longhorns over Oklahoma State University, and into the No. 5 spot on the BCS poll. Still, they are riding reputation in the polls. Texas has to stay on track and hope that Louisville loses to Rutgers. If so, they have a great shot at reappearing in the Championship game. Final Verdict: Colt McCoy is Heisman worthy in my opinion. Texas is in a great position with an at-large bid. Their fate, unfortunately, resides in Louisville.
