Black Knights Travel To South Bend For Battle With IrishThe sixth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish hope to hold off the Black Knights of Army Saturday (Nov 18) at Notre Dame Stadium and stay in the National Championship hunt. The game will be televised nationally by NBC with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. (EST).

Notre Dame has worked its way back into the national championship picture by winning seven straight games since falling to Michigan (47-21) in the third week of the season.

The Fighting Irish feature one of the nation’s most potent offenses, headed by All-America senior quarterback Brady Quinn. Projected to be a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, Quinn ranks ninth nationally in total offense (274.5) and 12th in passing efficiency (154.5). With running back Darius Walker and wide receivers Jeff Samardzija and Rhema McKnight at his disposal, Quinn is surrounded by a host of talented playmakers. That group has helped the Fighting Irish rank eighth nationally in passing offense (279.3), 23rd in total offense (393.3) and 16th in scoring offense. Notre Dame has not been quite as impressive on defense, allowing an average of 329.2 total yards per game to stand 59th among national leaders. The Irish have allowed an average of 195.5 passing yards per contest (56th nationally) and 133.7 rushing yards per game (57th nationally).

After exploding for 62 points against VMI, the Black Knights’ offense has struggled to produce points in three of Army’s last four games. After registering a season-high 278 ground yards against VMI, the Black Knights have been unable to establish their running game the last four times out versus Connecticut, TCU, Tulane and Air Force, totaling just 387 rushing yards (96.8 avg.) in those contests. In fact, Army’s 131 yards rushing against Air Force marked the first time since that win over VMI that the Black Knights have topped 100 yards on the ground.

Army has not fared well on the betting board as well on the playing field losing five straight games against the spread. However the Black Knights might show a glimmer of light for those wanting to risk playing the Knights and taking the +30-point chalk. Army has only covered in two games ATS and both of those covers were against teams from a BCS league. Army covered +27 in its game at Texas A&M and had a chance SU vs. the Aggies only losing by four. The next week (Sept 30) Army defeated Baylor 27-20 SU and ATS +11.
