Texas comes into this bowl contest the favorite, but the Longhorns lack of consistency and their poor finish to the season make them a suspect play. While Mack Brown’s squad did bounce back from last season’s unexpected disaster, posting a winning 7-5 mark, it would appear to have some waning confidence given its 1-3 close to the regular season schedule.

Texas pulled out a 27-25 win over Texas A&M in what might have been the final meeting between the two longtime rivals, but it fell to Missouri and Kansas State prior to that victory and it got thumped by Baylor 48-24 after it.

The biggest problem for the Longhorns has been the inconsistent play of quarterbacks Case McCoy and David Ash, who have split time under center most of the season. McCoy threw for 1034 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions while Ash, a true freshman out of Belton, Texas, totaled 937 yards through the air with three touchdowns and eight picks.

In short, the Longhorns are no juggernaut and Cal, which also finished with the same 7-5 mark as Texas, would seemingly have every opportunity to keep things close this evening.

The Golden Bears looked strong down the stretch, winning three of their last four games and they nearly pulled off the upset against No. 4 Stanford in late November.

Junior Zach Maynard also gives Cal something Texas does not have, which is a reliable presence under center. Maynard took some lumps through the middle portion of the Bears schedule, but he completed 67 percent of his passes in the final four games while throwing five touchdowns to just one interception.

Tomorrow’s game marks the fifth meeting between these two schools and the first since 1970. The Longhorns won the first four contests and, despite Cal’s momentum, will probably make it 5-0 at Qualcomm tomorrow evening.
