The Oklahoma Sooners (11-2) and West Virginia Mountaineers (11-1) football teams have plenty to prove when they battle in tonight’s Tostito’s Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz., at University of Phoenix Stadium. Both teams had their chances to be playing for bigger marbles but late season losses in the regular season doomed their national championship hopes. Oklahoma did redeem itself after beating Missouri in the BIG XII championship game but didn’t have the votes to get into the BCS championship game. West Virginia was guaranteed a chance to play for a BCS national championship if they beat Pitt in its season finale. The Mountaineers were jolted losing to the Panthers then jolted twice when head coach Rich Rodriguez accepted the vacant Michigan coaching job. So the Mountaineers will be coached by an interim coaching staff who will probably join Rodriguez at Michigan following the game.
Oddsmakers at all the offshore sportsbooks favor the Sooners by at least a touchdown or more. BetUS and Bodog (Bodoglife.com) are offering OU at -8 ½ while Sportsbook.com has the Sooners at -7 ½. The game total also varies across the board from 61 to 63. Those books offering the 7 ½ point line are doing so at a higher price (-115) while those at 8 ½ are offering the standard -110.
Oklahoma is returning to the scene of last year's upset loss to Boise State in one of the most-thrilling bowl games ever played. The Sooners are making their fourth trip to the Fiesta Bowl where they are 1-2 in their previous appearances. They have not won a Fiesta Bowl since their inaugural trip to this game in the 1976 season. West Virginia is playing in the Fiesta Bowl for just the second time in history. The Mountaineers were blown out 34-21 by eventual national champion Notre Dame in their last visit here at the end of the 1998 season.
