Florida Gators vs. Southern Miss Golden Eagles College Football Highlights

Southern Miss Golden Eagles: 7
Florida Gators: 34

The Florida Gators heated up in the second half to blow out the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles on Saturday, September 2nd, 2006 at 6:00 PM EST.

The Florida Gators struggled early in the first half and fell behind Southern Mississippi early when quarterback Jeremy Young threw a strike to wide receiver Damion Carter for a 6 yard touchdown reception.  The Gators battled back and scored a touchdown on a 21 yard Chris Leak pass to Dallas Baker.  Later in the half, Florida running back DeShawn Wynn scored on a 3 yard run.  The score gave the Gators the lead and reignited the Swamp right before the half.

The Gators never looked back and came out firing in the second half of the game.  Chris Leak was 21 for 30 for 249 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception.  Leak is Heisman hopeful from Florida that should excel in his second season in Urban Meyers system but the offensive line needs to figure out how to stop giving up sacks.  Southern Miss was able to rack up 3 sacks against the Gators offensive line.

The Gators defense recorded 3 interceptions but no sacks.  Florida will need a pass rush if they expect to beat the Volunteers on September 16th.

The Gators play Central Florida on September 9th, 2006 in Gainesville but then travels to Knoxville the following week to battle the Tennessee Volunteers.  The Vols knocked off California today and stand in the way of the Gators SEC East Title hopes.
