Many predicted a BCS National Championship appearance for Jimbo Fisher’s Seminoles before the season kicked off in August, but it did not take long for their season to hit the skids. After winning its first two games against Louisiana-Monroe and Charleston Southern, Florida State lost three straight games to Oklahoma, Clemson, and Wake Forest.
Obviously that rough patch doomed any chance the Seminoles might have had a BCS bowl, yet alone championship, but it also ruined their shot at an ACC title. Still, the Seminoles regrouped and played extremely down the stretch, winning six of their last seven games, including their season finale against in-state rival Florida.
While FSU’s offense was expected to be a major force with quarterback E.J. Manuel at the helm, it failed to match the prowess of the defense. Fisher’s defense finished the regular season ranked sixth in the nation in yards per game allowed (274.6) and it figures to give the Irish trouble tonight.
Notre Dame, like FSU, opened the season with big expectations, and also like its’ bowl opponent, it did not take long to spoil some major postseason aspirations. The Irish opened the season with a stunning home loss to South Florida and it fell again the next weekend, also in stunning fashion, at Michigan.
Brian Kelly’s troops recovered from their poor start as well, though, and went on to win eight of their next 10 with the only two losses coming against USC and Stanford.
Tonight’s game marks the seventh meeting between Notre Dame and Florida State. FSU presently owns a 4-2 record against the Irish, but its last win came in November of 2003. The two schools last met in a bowl in 1996 when the Seminoles beat Notre Dame 31-26 in the Orange Bowl.
