BCS Game MVP Chris Leak and the rest of the University of Florida football team celebrated its 100th season of existence by winning the 2006 BCS National Championship by defeating the heavily favored Ohio State Buckeyes 41-14 from University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona Monday night. After surrendering a game opening 93 yard kickoff return to Buckeyes speedster Ted Ginn Jr., to go down 0-7, the Gators only gave up one touchdown to the Ohio State offense the rest of the way
Gator’s backup quarterback Tim Tebow threw one pass for one yard and one touchdown. Tebow usually replaces Chris Leak from time to time during running situations, ran for 40 yards on 10 rushes and one touchdown. The Florida offense netted 372 total yards to only 82 total yards for the Buckeyes. Gators senior quarterback Chris Leak, who faded from the Heisman hopefuls list early in the regular season, had a spectacular night guiding the Florida offense by completing 25 passes of 36 attempts for 214 yards, one touchdown and a 69.4% quarterback rating. Buckeye’s senior quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith was held in check by a tenacious Gator’s defense all night only completing four passes on 14 attempts for 35 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Smith also fumbled to the Gators deep in Florida territory that led to a Florida score. Football Betting is made easy at WagerWeb.com! The Buckeye’s defense struggled with the Florida speed on both sides of the ball. Six different Gators caught passes against a soft Ohio State zone. Gator’s freshman receiver Percy Harvin led all receivers by hauling down nine receptions for 59 yards closely followed by Cornelius Ingram with four receptions for 58 yards. On the ground DeShawn Wynn led the Gators ground game carrying for 19 rushes for 70 yards and one touchdown. Leak, who was named the game’s MVP, was exuberant after the game. “It’s the greatest feeling to be National Champs,” Leak said. “I am so proud of how we worked over four years. We’ve been very blessed. I am excited especially for my coaches and teammates. This is what we worked for and it’s humbling at the same time. |
