It could be argued that neither Michigan nor Virginia Tech belong in a BCS bowl game, but that would seem a fruitless endeavor at this juncture. The two teams are in New Orleans and they are prepared for this evening’s showdown, which, despite any sort fairness factor, should be entertaining.
The Wolverines feature one of the more dynamic playmakers in all of college football in junior quarterback Denard Robinson and the Hokies, per usual, possess one the nation’s more stingy defenses (17.2 points per game allowed). That battle alone will make this contest worth watching.
Michigan’s appearance in tonight’s game marks a huge turnaround for the floundering traditional power. The Wolverines were anything but successful under former head coach Rich Rodriguez, compiling a 15-22 record during his three year tenure, but current front man, Brady Hoke, wasted little time putting his stamp on the program.
Michigan, a loser in five of its last six postseason appearances, stunned most pundits with its 10-2 record and second place finish in the Big Ten’s Legends Division. And it accomplished those two things in spite of a schedule that included 10 bowl teams.
Virginia Tech’s presence in tonight’s Sugar Bowl is far less surprising given the school’s run of double digit win seasons under longtime coach Frank Beamer. The Hokies extended that streak to eight this year as they finished up the season with an 11-2 mark.
Virginia Tech defeated all comers with the exception of ACC rival Clemson. The Tigers knocked off the Hokies 23-3 in Blacksburg on October 1st and they foiled Beamer’s squad a second time on December 3rd when the two teams meet in the ACC Championship (38-10). Tech, which is making its fourth Sugar Bowl appearance, outscored the rest of its opposition by an average of 17.7 points per game.
2012 Sugar Bowl Game Betting Trend: Michigan is 4-6 straight up and 3-7 against the spread in its last 10 games as a favorite with a spread between 0 and 3.5 points.
