MPC Computers Bowl Preview: Miami Hurricanes vs. Nevada Wolf PackThe University of Miami (FL) Hurricanes (6-6) will be playing their final football game under head coach Larry Coker when they battle the University of Nevada Wolf Pack (10-2) Sunday in the MPC Computers Bowl from Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. (EST). The game will be televised by ESPN.

Nevada is coached by Chris Ault, who is finishing his 22nd season coaching the team. Ault is fourth among active NCAA Division-1A coaches in victories with 187. He has led the Wolf Pack to eight conference championships and nine postseason appearances.

Nevada got behind the eight-ball in losing its first two games, before winning eight of its next 10 games to roar into third place in the WAC with an 8-4 record. Sandwiched in between a pair of losses to conference powerhouses Boise State and Hawaii was a five-game feast of opponents for the Wolf Pack. During the streak, it was the defense that stabilized the Pack, as they gave up just 35 points during that span and pitched two shutouts.

Nevada ranked 19th with 30.9 points per game offensively, but was middle of the pack at 36th defensively, allowing 19 points per game. Jeff Rowe tossed 16 touchdown passes, with Mike McCoy hauling in the lion’s share with nine. Luke Lippincott ran for under 500 yards, but found enough daylight to score nine rushing touchdowns for the Wolf Pack.

Miami was plagued with a number of problems other than its won-loss record including the murder of defensive end Bryan Pata, and the firing of Coker at the end of their regular season. Don’t forget the brawl with Florida International, either. Through it all, the Hurricanes are still going to their ninth consecutive bowl game.

The Miami offense was one of the worst in the country, and quarterback Kyle Wright threw for only 1,655 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions before he was injured with three weeks left in the season. Kirby Freeman is now in charge, and he led the Hurricanes to a season-ending 17-14 win over then-No.18 Boston College, which generated some badly-needed momentum for Miami.

The defense was the saving grace for Miami, as it ranked in the Top 10 in the nation in yards allowed at 252.1 and against the run at 66 yards per game. Calais Campbell had 10 sacks to lead the Hurricanes up front.

Nevada , +3 underdogs to Miami, was a money-machine for backers as they cashed in 10-of-12 football games against the spread and were solid at keeping opponents off the scoreboard by allowing the UNDER to cash in 8-of-12 games.

Miami, favored by a -3 point chalk in the game were one of the least reliable teams ATS by cashing in only four games this season. However, the UNDER cashed in 10-of-11 games the team played. The total for the MPC Computers Bowl is set at 42 points.
