Two teams that performed well during the regular season, but still failed to meet expectations will get a shot at redemption in tomorrow’s Capital One Bowl. The high profile postseason event, which takes place at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, features the Big Ten’s Nebraska Cornhuskers squaring off against the SEC’s South Carolina Gamecocks. The game is scheduled for a 1:00pm ET start on ESPN; South Carolina is listed as a -3 against the spread favorite. Nebraska’s first season as a member of the Big Ten was expected to be a memorable one as most pundits picked the Huskers to win the conference’s new Legends Division. While Bo Pelini’s squad did put together a fine season, it failed to live up to preseason billing, closing out play with a 9-3 overall mark and 5-3 league record. The Huskers, consequently, finished behind Michigan State and Michigan in the Legends race.
South Carolina went through a similar experience with its second place finish in the SEC East. Most expected the Gamecocks to back up last year’s division title, but, despite a week two win at Georgia, they placed second to the Bulldogs with a 6-2 conference record.
South Carolina’s 10-2 finish was impressive nonetheless, especially considering the early drama it went through with beleaguered quarterback Stephen Garcia and a season ending injury to star running back Marcus Lattimore. The Gamecocks inserted Connor Shaw into the starting role following the early October dismissal of Garcia, and the sophomore performed admirably, throwing 12 touchdowns to six interceptions. Shaw was particularly impressive in the season’s final two games as he completed 30-of-38 passes for 427 yards, six touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez also posted some quality numbers, throwing for 1973 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for 837 yards and nine scores. The dynamic Martinez will have his hands full tomorrow, though, as he attempts to move the ball against a Gamecocks defense that ranks fourth in the nation in yards per game allowed (268.9).
The Huskers, which are 3-0 all-time against South Carolina, have won just three of their last 10 games as an underdog with a spread between 0 and 3.5 (3-5-2 ATS). Conversely, the Gamecocks are 9-1 straight up and 8-2 against the spread as a favorite with the same spread.
