North Carolina Tar Heels 2006 ACC PreviewNorth Carolina Tar Heels O:5 D:7

The North Carolina Tar Heels had one of the hardest schedules in the NCAA last year, and ended up with a 5-6 mark overall.  Head coach John Bunting was forced to do some retooling with his assistants this past off-season, and the players say they feel a buzz and positive aura around the team. Whether that means a winning season is yet to be seen.

North Carolina returns 12 overall starters, and has some quality depth for the first time in a while. They went 4-4 in ACC play last year, but fell short of bowl contention because of a vicious non-conference slate. Their schedule is more manageable, and they get to play seven of their 12 games at home. The offense was weak last year averaging 18 points per game, and will have both pivots Cam Sexton and Nebraska transfer Joe Dailey dueling for the starting spot. Former Fresno State Offensive Coach Frank Cignetti was brought aboard this past off season, so the offense should be more effective on the ground and through the air.

On defense, the Heels are very experienced and have size and speed. They should improve on the 26 points per game they gave up a year ago. Special teams returns completely intact, and should finish in the top 25. There's a positive feeling about the Heels upcoming season, and it's well deserved. This program has recruited very well over the last few years, and has the players on hand to upset a few of the elite squads in the ACC. The squad isn't in position to contend for a title, but give them a few more seasons. However, six or seven wins and a bowl trip are probable.
