The 2012 Gator Bowl, which is scheduled for a 1:00pm ET kickoff at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, features two of the nation’s most recognizable college football programs in Ohio State and Florida. While the Buckeyes and Gators carry a lot of clout, both schools come into today’s game with something to prove as they each finished up a pedestrian 6-6. College football odds makers believe it is the Gators who have more bite, though. Florida, consequently, comes in a slight 2.5 point against the spread favorite. The Will Muschamp era at Florida began in great fashion with the Gators winning their first four games by an average of 31.3 points per game. The team looked both explosive on offense and dominant on defense through the first third of the season, which included wins over conference foes Tennessee and Kentucky.
Then Alabama and LSU happened. The Gators proved no match for either team, falling 38-10 to the Tide and 41-11 to the Tigers. The hangover from those back-to-back affairs lasted another two weeks with Muschamp’s crew losing to Auburn and Georgia.
Florida, which ranks 72nd in the nation in scoring (25.6 points per game), did recover some from its mid-season collapse, but it hardly built a great deal of momentum down the stretch. The Gators split their final four games, but they again failed to hang with upper echelon teams, losing 17-12 to South Carolina and 21-7 to in-state rival Florida State in the season finale.
Ohio State, after an off-season of turmoil, was still expected to be a dominant football team when the season kicked off in September. The Buckeyes showed early on, however, that it would not be a typical Ohio State season.
The team, operating under interim head coach Luke Fickell, lost three of its first six games and worst still, it got dumped by Big Ten rivals Michigan State and Nebraska. The Buckeyes regrouped, though, posting a three game win streak in the middle of the season that included an upset of Big Ten winner Wisconsin.
Ohio State did not finish well, however, losing three straight to fall to 6-6 overall and 3-5 in league play. Perhaps a bowl win, along with the hire of Urban Meyer, can put a positive spin on an otherwise tumultuous year. The Buckeyes have performed well as an underdog with a total between 41.5 and 44, going 3-1 both straight up and against the spread in that role (Over 4-0 in those same games).
