by Thomas Jensen on Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

Oklahoma State Cowboys Look to Corral Crimson Tide in Independence BowlThe University of Alabama Crimson Tide (6-6) of the SEC will be 2 ½ point underdogs when they go against the Oklahoma State University Cowboys (6-6) of the Big 12 Conference in the Petro Sun Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La on Wednesday, Dec. 28, starting at 4:30 p.m. (EST).

The Cowboys and Crimson Tide both had their share of close games and with a bounce here or there could be playing on a much larger stage. Three of Alabama’s losses have come by a total of 11 points while the Cowboys lost four games to Big 12 powers, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Kansas State by a total of 18 points.

The bad luck or as they say, a bad bounce and a couple of wide rights, cost Alabama head coach Mike Shula his job at the end of the regular season and replaced by defensive coordinator Joe Kines on an interim basis.

Kines will coach the Crimson Tide in the bowl and former Tulsa head coach Dave Rader will coordinate the offense.

The public likes Oklahoma State on the side bet with 55% of the wagering action going on the Cowboys. The percentages are also in favor of the under in totals action with 75% of the public money being placed on the under 51 points.

The Crimson Tide only played in one game this season where the total was over 50-points and that game was the season opener against Hawaii in Tuscaloosa. In that game the Alabama defense held the potent Hawaii Warrior offense in check only giving up 17 points and winning straight up 25-17keeping the total points scored to 42, eight points under the established total. On the season, the over cashed most often 7of-11 in games the Crimson Tide played. Alabama was an even 6-6 against the spread on side bets.

The Cowboys were dead even 6-6 in side bet results while cashing in 7-of-11 games for the Over.

Look for defense to dominate in this game giving the advantage to the Crimson Tide +2 ½. The under 51 total will also be the better bet.
