SEC Preview (Week 4)

Kentucky vs. Florida – Line Fl –26, Total OFF, TV ESPN, Kickoff 7:45 p.m. (EDT)   

Kentucky and Florida meet for the 57th time with the Gators leading the all time series 39-17. The Gators hold a 22-4 advantage when playing in Gainesville. Florida has won 19 consecutive meetings over the Wildcats. Kentucky has not won at “The Swamp” since the 1979 season. The Gators have dominated the series in recent years. Florida is in its second year under head coach Urban Meyer. The Gator’s offense is led by Heisman Trophy candidate Chris Leak who last week, led Florida to a 21-20 win at Tennessee.

Tulane vs. LSU – Line LSU –36 Total 48, TV ESPN (GP), Kickoff 8:00 p.m. (EDT) 

LSU and Tulane renew one of the South’s oldest rivalries on Saturday in Tiger Stadium in the first of 10 games between the teams over the next decade. The teams have met 94 times with the Tigers holding a 65-22-7 advantage in the series that dates back to 1983. The teams played every year from 1919 to 1994 when the series was dropped. LSU and Tulane have played twice since 1994 with the Tiger’s winning both contests. LSU has won 14 straight against the Green Wave a streak that dates back to a 20-7 victory in 1983. LSU is 35-10-1 all-time against Tulane in Baton Rouge. This will be LSU coach Les Miles’ first game against Tulane. While Saturday’s game will mark the first between LSU and Tulane since 2001, it hasn’t been that long since the Green Wave played in Tiger Stadium. Last year Tulane beat Southeastern Louisiana in Tiger Stadium.

 

Colorado vs. Georgia – Line UGA –27, Total OFF, TV-Yahoo Internet Live/Jefferson Financial, Kickoff, 12:30 p.m. (EDT)

Georgia’s meeting with Colorado will be the first between the two teams although the Bulldogs have met several opponents from the Big XII in their history. Georgia is 10-7 all-time against teams now in the Big XII. The most recent game was a 15-12 win by Georgia over Texas Tech in 1996. Georgia’s defense is ranked first in the SEC and second nationally in scoring defense after posting back to back shutout over South Carolina and UAB. The Bulldogs have only given up one touchdown in 2006, to Western Kentucky in the season opener. Colorado has struggled in 2006 under first year head coach Dan Hawking going 0-3 including a 19-10 loss to Div.1AA, Big Sky Conference member Montana State, on Sept.6. The Buffalos also lost to Colorado State 14-10 and Arizona State 21-3.

 

Buffalo vs. Auburn – Line AU –42, Total OFF, TV- None, Kickoff, 2:30 p.m. (EDT)

This will be the first meeting between Auburn and Buffalo. Auburn has played five games against current members of the Mid-American Conference winning all five games. First year head coach Turner Gill was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 1983 while a quarterback at Nebraska and was part of the three national championships as a coach with the Huskers from 1992-2004. Buffalo joined the Mid-American Conference in 1999. 

 

Marshall vs Tennessee – Line TN –22, Total 42 ½, TV –None, Kickoff 4:30 p.m. (EDT)

After opening SEC action with a one-point loss last weekend, Tennessee steps out of the league to host C-USA member Marshall on Saturday. The visit to Neyland Stadium is the second for the Thundering Herd, who lost 34-24 in their only other trip to Knoxville in 2003. Second year Marshall head coach Mark Snyder is making his coaching debut against the SEC and UT is the final non-conference match-up this season for the Thundering Herd.

 

Wake Forest vs Ole Miss- Line UM –2 1/2, Total 42, TV-None, Kickoff 6:00 p.m. (EDT) 

This will be the first meeting between the two schools. The game versus Wake Forest will mark Ole Miss’ first against an opponent from the current ACC since they defeated Georgia Tech in the 1971 Peach Bowl. Ole Miss is 3-5 at home under head coach Ed Orgeron.

 

Miss St vs. UAB –Line UAB –9 ½, Total 38, TV-None, Kickoff 7:00 p.m. (EDT)

When Mississippi State visits UAB this weekend, the Bulldogs will aim to put an end to a 15-game true road losing streak, a skid that dates to the middle of the 2002 season. Mississippi State has posted an 80-61-3 overall record in school history against teams that currently comprise Conference USA. The Bulldogs, however have posted just a 44-44-3 against C-USA when paying away from Scott Field. State has won just one of its last four games vs. Conference USA opponents. UAB head football coach Watson Brown, now in his 12th season at the head of the Blazers program, served as the offensive coordinator at MSU in 1991-92. MSU has dropped its last five road openers since beginning the 2000 campaign with a 17-3 victory at Memphis. 

 

Florida Atlantic vs. South Carolina- Line SC –29 ½ Total 48, TV-ESPN (GP), Kickoff 7:00 p.m. (EDT) 

This is the first meeting ever between the Gamecocks and the Owls. South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has not faced FAU previously in his 17year collegiate coaching career. This week’s game features a pair of coaches who have won national championships. USC’s Spurrier led the 1996 Florida Gators to the National championship with a 52-20 win over Florida State in the Sugar Bowl.  Howard Schnellenberger, Owls head coach led the 1983 Miami Hurricanes lone loss that season in an 11-1 campaign was in the season-opener to Florida by a 28-3 score. The Owls have not scored a point in the first half this season.
